  • Introduce Yourself
  • The first thing your essay should do is introduce you as a person in a general way. Talk about your life, but don’t go into too much detail: this is an essay not an autobiography. You should give a brief synopsis about who you are and how you came to be where you. What is it you want from life and how do you plan to achieve these goals?

  • Have a Theme
  • The rest of your essay doesn’t have to follow a theme, but it will make writing it all the easier. If you want to just talk about some general things, then by all means go ahead. But it will help the flow of your essay if you find a way to tie things together. Maybe your theme is college, or maybe it’s a love of music, or maybe it’s family. Whatever it is, pick a theme and have that run through your essay. You’ll find writing it easier, and others will find reading it more enjoyable.

  • Three Points
  • All good essays tackle three points. These three points should relate to your theme in some way. For example, if family is your theme then point one could be the role of your father in how you got to college, points two could be how your mother drove you to be the best you can be, and point three could be how your brother wants to be just like you when he grows up. Whatever your theme is, make sure you have three points about you to back it up.

  • Conclude
  • Your conclusion should simply round up all that you’ve said previously. Tie it in nicely and make it stick it he readers mind. Gently remind them of each of your three points and how they relate to our theme. And viola! Follow these little tips and you have your essay. So get writing!
