19th Century British Literature

As of right now, in college all around the country, 19th Century British Literature classes are taught. Those that have literature as their major take these classes not only to read some great classics, but to learn more about some of the most famous authors in the world. While opinions may vary as to who the best books are, there are plenty of them that are not only enjoyable to read, but also teach an important lesson about life in that time period or a lesson about life.

1. Nicholas Nickleby, by Charles Dickens:

The story of a young man who has to become the man of the house after his father leaves them. Another great story by Charles Dickens that shows how anyone can overcome anything if they never give up and have a strong spirit!

2. Villette by Charlotte Bronte:

The Bronte sisters were all about social commentary even back in their time, and this story is a great example of a strong woman overcoming what is acceptable in society and introduces the world to feminism.

3. Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy:

Thomas Hardy wrote a great book about a young woman named Tess who goes through everything from being sexually assaulted, to stabbing her ex-lover to death. Tess eventually goes to jail, and ends up being executed.

4. A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle:

This is the book that introduced the world to Sherlock Holmes , and anyone that loves detective novels basically owes it to Doyle for giving the world its greatest detective ever.

5. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley:

Mary Shelley wrote this story as a way to entertain her friends, and she basically created the very first horror novel, and the most horrifying monster ever! How many Frankenstein movies have been created thanks to this English woman, and her brilliant mind?

For anyone that truly loves to read, the best class to take in college is one involving 19th century British literature. This class will help anyone that loves literature get a better appreciation for some of the best books ever written. There are so many great novels written in that time frame that there are too numerous to mention, but this short list is some of the best, and their creation changed the world of literature forever.
