Prevention Of Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugars due to a deficiency in insulin production or insulin action. Insulin works by facilitating entry of glucose into the cell thus lowering the blood level of glucose in the bloodstream. There are three types of diabetes; Diabetes Type 1, type 2 and gestation Diabetes. Type 2 diabetes also known as non-insulin independent diabetes is prevalent in the world today, however there are several ways to prevent it.

Type 2 diabetes is common in overweight teenagers and adults above 40years, in this case the body does not produce enough insulin or there is insulin resistance that is linked to excess weight, the cells are not able to utilize the insulin produced for glucose uptake from the blood. Overweight people are more at risk of type 2 diabetes. It is more prevalent in people of African American heritage, Hispanic and Asian origin. Gestational diabetes is also a risk factor for type 2 diabetes; if one develops hyperglycemia in pregnancy the risk of type 2 diabetes is higher. Hypertension also predisposes one to diabetes type 2. This type of diabetes may go undiagnosed for many years as the hyperglycemia develops gradually and the symptoms are not severe enough for the patient to notice, most of the patients present with complications like chronic leg ulcers, retinopathy among others. Some of the classic symptoms include increased urination, drinking a lot of fluids, fatigue, blurry vision, some people may present with frequent infections like thrush among other symptoms.

Unlike type 1 diabetes, diabetes type 2 can be treated by controlling dietary intake and increasing physical activity. This can be achieved by balancing insulin production and carbohydrate intake in order to control sugars. Increasing intake of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, decreasing blood fats (cholesterol and triglycerides) and maintaining lipoproteins at desirable levels are some of the preventive measures recommended. 

Appropriate weight maintenance is also essential for control of type 2 diabetes, an hour of moderate physical activity is recommended to prevent weight gain. Health education on diabetes would also be a huge step towards preventing diabetes as it would raise awareness and inform the public about the severity of the disease.

In conclusion diabetes is becoming more prevalent in the society due to poor lifestyle characterized by high intake of calorie foods and reduced physical activity. This can however be controlled by improving the diet to comprise of less sugars and fatty foods and increasing physical fitness to improve general cardiovascular fitness and reduce chances of hypertension and stroke.
